Richard Jones is a partner in the Litigation, Environmental and Regulatory practice groups of McMillan LLP’s Calgary office. His practice focuses on corporate and commercial litigation, constitutional, municipal, and environmental law. Richard's work includes dealing with water rights and he is one of only a few lawyers in Alberta practicing in this area. Some of the matters he has worked on dealt with the devolution of water resources from the Federal government to the Province of Alberta, water licensing and Crown reserved water. Richard provides advice and strategy to clients in relation to business and regulatory disputes, regulatory risk avoidance and mitigation. He has appeared successfully before all levels of court and a variety of administrative boards and tribunals. Richard is also a trained and experienced mediator.
Richard is a frequent writer and speaker on a variety of legal topics involving water and property rights, municipal law, and federal and provincial environmental regulation. He has a deep interest in technology and is a board member of the Alberta Blockchain Consortium, which provides a unified voice for blockchain technology in Alberta.
Richard is a member of McMillan Vantage LP, which provides policy and government relations advice. He was a member of the independent Alberta Conservative Consolidation Committee that authored the report “Removing the Legal Roadblocks: The Road Forward to Unification of Alberta’s Conservative Parties.” He is currently assisting with preparing an opinion on the legal steps toward Alberta's autonomy.
